Freelancers happier, healthier than permanent employees

Why would people choose the uncertainty of contract or temporary work while they can have the security of a permanent job?

Simple. They have more "Autonomy" in how they do their work, what kind of work they do and how they are paid. A recent study of 225 human resource managers and 2,035 employed adults, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Randstad, a human resource and staffing company has found that temporary and contract workers are more satisfied with their job than permanent workers.

The study concluded that:

  • 86% of temporary/contractors agree their current level of job satisfaction is very good/excellent compared to 73 percent of permanent workers.
  • 54% of temporary/contract workers strongly agree with the statement “I am paid what I’m worth” compared to only 42 percent of permanent workers.
  • 73 % of contract workers rate their growth potential with their current employer as good or excellent.
Consider that contract and temporary workers have less job security, and many of them do not have healthcare insurance. Having Autonomy is so important that it makes up for these shortcomings and results in higher overall satisfaction. Imagine that we could have Autonomy in our permanent workplaces. The worker satisfaction would be much better.
